Drake proposes a vision of single-slot finality, where blocks are finalized immediately, drastically reducing the risk of reorganizations and opportunities for MEV exploitation.

Speeding up finalization requires substantial computing power, potentially centralizing Ethereum’s validator network as those with higher resources dominate. This centralization risk poses a critical question: how to balance blockchain speed with decentralized accessibility.


Zero-Knowledge Technology Moves to Layer-1


Ethereum has already embraced ZK rollups on its layer-2 networks, enabling faster, cheaper transactions off-chain that are then settled back on Ethereum’s base layer. ZK technology can verify transactions without exposing the underlying data, a powerful tool for scaling while preserving privacy.


With Beam Chain, Drake suggests taking it a step further by embedding ZK proofs directly into Ethereum’s core infrastructure, the layer-1 chain. This foundational change could redefine Ethereum’s relationship with layer-2 rollups by making ZK functionality native to the base chain. For Ethereum, this integration could expand both its security and scalability, a boon for ZK-powered networks like Polygon’s zkEVM or zkSync, which have thrived within the Ethereum ecosystem.

Instead of the annual incremental updates we’re familiar with, Drake’s Beam Chain roadmap envisions addressing immediate needs with small updates while saving major changes for larger, more infrequent upgrades.


This strategy could allow Ethereum to tackle the rapid accumulation of technical debt without disrupting the stability of existing operations.
